Mary Fitzgerald is a choreographer, performer, educator and socially engaged arts practitioner. She was a member of Kei Takei’s Moving Earth for nearly ten years, performing and teaching internationally. She also has danced with Fred Darsow Dance, A Ludwig Dance Theatre, and many independent choreographers throughout the U.S. Mary has been a guest artist for several professional companies and dance programs in the United States, Europe, Japan, China, Mexico, India, Colombia, and Israel. Her choreography has received funding from the Ministry of Culture in Mexico, Japan Foundation, Arizona Commission on the Arts, Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and ASU’s Institute of Humanities Research and Leonardo. She won the Arizona Choreography Competition (2005) and received an Artists Project Award (2006) and Research and Development Grant (2023) from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. In 2018, she was honored with the Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award/Dance Artist.
As a community artist and faculty member at Arizona State University, Mary has engaged in partnerships with youth groups and older adults throughout the Phoenix area since 1998. Her collaborative projects with local artists and ASU colleagues have been recognized with the President’s Medal for Social Embeddeness at ASU and have received support from numerous organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts. Mary is the recipient of several teaching awards at ASU and has been honored with two nominations for ASU Professor of the Year.
