Mary Fitzgerald: Movement and Image

As an artist and educator, I am interested in investigating the multiple roles of contemporary dance in society. Using a range of art making practices that emphasize the power of movement and image, my work explores the relationships that we have to each other, our communities, and the natural world.  I create intimate portraiture, as well as large-scale projects that investigate social issues and the aesthetics of scientific processes.  A feminist perspective and concern for social justice exists in all of my practices.  The interplay of simplicity and complexity fascinates me – the big and small questions about who we are as human beings, and how we make sense of the world through our physicality and imagination.
